Carbon Emissions
Harlow Printing Limited is certified to ISO 14001 and controlling/reducing our carbon emissions is an integral part of our sustainability targets.
Our current calculation in relation to carbon emissions is 86 Co2 tonnes .
We source our electricity from green sustainable sources with nil carbon emission, so it is not possible to reduce emissions from electricity consumption.
Gas is utilised for heating which is a target for reduction within our ISO 14001 targets, this has been reduced by 15% in recent years.
Petrol consumption from company vehicles is our largest direct contributor to carbon emissions and we have introduced a policy for all high mileage vehicles requiring Co2 emissions of 130 g/km and petrol consumption greater than 55 mpg.
Sustainable purchasing is an integral part of our ISO policies and procedures. We have reviewed all major purchases and where possible ensured they are from sustainable sources. Paper for example is sourced for mills and merchants that plant two trees for each felled to ensure future sustainability of the product.
We now also source “ carbon Balanced paper “ when possible. Carbon Balancing by the World Land trust tackles climate change through projects that both offset carbon dioxide emissions and conserve biodiversity.
We recognise that our operations have the potential to affect the environment. Harlow Printing meets all legal and regulatory requirements. Indeed, we regard it as critically important that we continuously improve all aspects of our environmental performance. Therefore we ensure that while satisfying the demanding requirements of our clients, our goods, services and internal housekeeping comply with environmental legislation and best practice.
In partnership with County Durham Environmental Trust (CDENT) and Groundwork South Tyneside and Newcastle we have designed and developed a wildlife garden at our new warehouse and distribution centre. The garden is a biodiversity project providing a natural habitat for endangered flora and fauna. Local schools have been involved in the planting of many hundreds of shrubs and trees over the last several months. The garden is now available as a curriculum resource for local schools providing opportunities for the practical application and appreciation of habitat, environment and indigenous species. We have been the recipient of many awards for environmental good practice including:
Evening Chronicle Environmental business of the year award
STEP awards for environmental good practice
South Tyneside Borough Council Gold award for environmental good practice
